Sir John Scarlett

Sir John Scarlett served as Chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS or MI6) from 2004 to 2009. He joined SIS in 1971 and over the next twenty years served in Nairobi, Paris and twice in Moscow as well as several assignments in London. He was appointed CHAIR of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) in September 2001 and rejoined SIS as its Chief in 2004. From 2012-2018, he was chair of the Bletchley Park Trust. His current roles include co-founder and senior advisor, SC Strategy Ltd; Vice-President of the UK Association de la Legion d’Honneur; Trustee of the French Institute in the United Kingdom and Trustee of the Royal Medical Foundation of Epsom College. In 2021, he was appointed a Distinguished Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), having been RUSI Vice-Chair since 2016. Sir John is co-chair of the Global Advisory Council (GAC) at the Woodrow Wilson Center.
